1st MATHEMATICIAN

Baudhāyana,
was an Indian
mathematician, who was most likely also a priest. He is noted as the author of
the earliest
Sulba Sutra —
appendices to the Vedas
giving rules for the construction of
altars —
called the Baudhāyana
Śulbasûtra , which contained
several important
mathematical results. He is
older than other famous mathematician Apastambha.
He belongs to Yajurveda
school.He is accredited with
calculating the value of pi to some degree of
precision, and with
investigating what is now known as the Pythagorean
theorem.

1st ASTRONOMER

Aryabhatta (476-550 CE) was the first Indian to say that the earth rotates on its axis and that the paths of planetary bodies are elliptical.He calculated the circumference of the earth .Some decades later Ujjain's Brahmgupta (598-668 CE) developed accurate methods of  calculating paths of heavenly bodies , eclipses and conjunctions. He was the first to state that the moon is much nearer to the earth than the sun,

Debut author Chetan Bhagat's story  of three boys bumbling their  way through IIT, Five Point Someone  hit the stands in 2004 and become the first Indian novel in English to sell over a million copies . The book has stayed on best-seller list since.

Arundhati Roy became the first Indian citizen to win the Booker Prize  in 1997 with her debut novel ,The God of small Things, a tale about for bidden love.Before this, only writers of Indian origin - VS Naipaul for In a Free State. 1971 and Salman Rushdie for Midnight's children,1983- had won the prestigious prize.Since then ,Kiran Desai (The Inheritance of Loss,2006)and Arvind Adiga (The White Tiger ,2008)have also won .

1st CRORE -COPIES SELLER

Black magic, tantric potions and a thinly veiled  and very  racy account of  Rajiv Gandhi's assassination made Hindi pulp fiction writer Ved Prakash Sharma's Vardi wala Gunda an instant and constant best seller. Published a few year after the assassination in 1991,the Meerut based author's book has now reportedly sold over 8 crore copies.

1st LITERATURE NOBEL

Rabindranath Tagore become the first and only Indian to win the Nobel prize for litrature in 1913 for "his profoundly sensitive , fresh and beautiful verse , by which, with consummate skill, he had made his poetic  thought expressed in his own English words a part of the literature of the West.

1st GRAMMARIAN

Panini, who possibly lived in the 4th century BCE, was the first to put togather a systematic and codified treatise on grammer in Sanskrit . His Ashtadhyayi. containing about 4,000 slokas ex planing the rules of grammar, has influnced modern linguists .Tolkappiyam was the first work to codify Tamil grammer and literary conventions.

1st PRESIDENT OF INDIAN NATIONAL CONGRESS

The Grand Old Party of India has a long history and several presidents.But the honour of presiding over the very first  Congress session held in Bombay in 1885 goes to Womesh Chandra Bonnerjee.He  already had a formidable reputation as a barrister in Calcutta,having defended Surendranath Banerjea in a famous contempt president . He was re-elected Congress president in 1892

1st MP

MP's don't have much of a reputation  these days.But the first Indian to become an MP in the British House of Commons -Dadabhai Naoroji- boasted of a formidable resume . The man who scathingly critiqued British economic policies ,was elected from the Finsbury Central contituency in 1892.

1st USE OF CANNONS

On one side was Babur and his 15,000-strong invading army .On the other side was Delhi Sultan Ibrahim Lodi and his 130,000 men and 300 elephants. But Babur had an ace up his sleeve:20-old pieces of artillery .The guns won the day Babur.

1st ICS OFFICER

Think Tagore and you think of Rabindra-nath.But his elder brother ,Satyendranath, has a uniq first to his name. He was the first Indian to crack the INDIAN CIVIL SERVICE exam in England in 1863. He returned to India the next year and was posted for several years  in western India . Not surprisingly, he was a man of letters too, transleting Tilak's Gitarahasya and Tukaram's poem into Bengali.

1st SIGNIFICANT BATTLE FOUGHT BY THE BRITISH

It's not the British hadn't fought any wars in India before the Battle of  plassey.But the beginnings of the British empire in India can be traced to the battlefield of Palashi or Plassey, a few miles from Murshidabad .The British led by Robert Clive were up against against a much larger army under Nawab Siraj-ud-daulah.But superior tactics and betrayal by the Nawab's aides ensured a famous British victory.

1st FOREIGN TRAVELLER TO INDIA

Well before the Mraco Polos and Al Barunis  Megasthene visited the court of Chandragupta Maurya around 300 BCE. He is believed to have an ambassador to the court of Chandragupta, whom he referred to as  Sandracottus. Besides Patliputa and the northern plains, it is not known where else Megasthene travelled ..He left an account of his travels titled INDICA

1st WOMEN RULER


The first women, so far as we know, to ascend the throne was Razia sultan.She succeeded her father Iltutmish in 1236 before the court's nobles plotted to overthrow and possibly kill her.Though she ruled  for a brief four years, her memory lives on.she become the subject of a Bollywood blockbuster directed by Kamal Amrohi where Hema Malini played Razia..Just two decades after Raziz, Rani Rudrama Devi  become the first queen of the Kaktiya dynasty in south India. she had no brothers and her father, King Ganapathideva, designated her a 'son' in a religious ceremony and named her his heir. she ruled from 1262 to 1289.

1st MEMOIR BY A KING

Hagiographies of rulers have a long history.But very few actually took time out to write their memoirs .The founder of the Mughal empire,Zahiruddin Mohammad Babur, was an exception. His memoirs, originally written in Chagtai, which begins from the time he become king in Ferghana  at the age of 12, was the first autobiography by an indain ruler.

1st PEACENIK RULER

Ancient kings made  their name  through conquest and more conquest. Ashoka was no different but he had the most publicised change of heart in Indian history  after the bloody war of Kalinga around 265 BCE, where over 100,000 were killed. subsequently asked himself -"Is this a victory or a defeat "- and converted to Buddhism, making him the first peacenik ruler of India.

1st SYMBOL OF GLOBALISATION

Centuries before the European trading companies,the subcontinent was home to a flourishing network of ocean trade. This is why Indus Valley seals and  other artifacts have been found as far away as Mesopotamia . In that sense , they are the first symbols of trade and globlisation. Lothal in present-day Gujrat was probably the most significant of the trading ports between 2500-1900 BCE

1st TEXT

In a civilisation that relied on oral transmission of knowledge,the first book was a long time coming . But if any text can be regarded as the mother text of Indic civilisation , it's the Vedas.Though there are no exact dates available for when vedas come into existence , it could have been anywhere between 1500 and 500 BCE.

The bronze statuette of a slender women, dating back to 2500 BCe,is known in history textbooks as the Dancing Girl. it was discovered in 1926 at Mohenjodaro, now in Pakistan . British archeologist Mortimer Wheeler had this to say about her. "A girl perfectly , for the moment, perfectly confident of herself and the world.There's nothing like her, I think, in the world".  need we say more ?

1st PUBLIC WORKS



The infrastructure in most Indian cities might be crumbling, including roads specially relaid for the forthcoming Delhi Commonwealth Games,but thousands of year ago the Indus Valley planners got it right. Many of the indus cities had wide streets following a grid system , darins and public wells.The Great Bath of Mohen-jodaro,the largest ofthem, has stood the test of time .One only wishes today's planners would learn somthing from these ancient wonders.
